Call-For-Entries: The Bitters,”Fuck It.”


Whitdel Arts is currently accepting submissions for The Bitters,“Fuck It.”  


In all areas of life, occasions of expectation, trust or belief are often rewarded with letdown, lies and betrayal. Over time, this repetitive cycle can result in the development of mechanisms which aid in coping with ongoing disappointment. This exhibition looks to share examples of visual response generated by feelings of sarcasm, cynicism, and an overall disenchantment with things.

Stephen William Schudlich is the Director of Exhibitions for work •detroit, The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design’s (The University of Michigan) exhibition space for creative process, located in Detroit’s cultural center.  He is responsible for helping to create and sustain a dialogue and engagement between the Stamps School and the arts communities of Detroit, the United States, and beyond.  As an illustrator / designer, he has provided work for clients such as The New York Times, The Utne Reader, Comedy Central, and Scholastic.  He has also worked with WGBH (Boston), Heineken, and Nike.  His illustrations have been an integral part of the global eBay brand and, he illustrated the book The Down-to-Earth Guide to Global Warming, which was published by Scholastic and co-authored by Cambria Gordon and Laurie David, the Oscar winning producer of An Inconvenient Truth.  His work has been included in The New York Art Directors Annual, Print, How, and the AIGA Design Annual and has been exhibited in numerous galleries including Gallery Project, The Elaine L. Jacob Gallery, DAM, The Scarab Club, Paint Creek Center for the Arts and, in The Old Federal Building as part of the inaugural ArtPrize event in Grand rapids, MI.  His work has found purchase within the collection of Valparaiso University as well as many private collections. His work is also included in exhibition catalogues and anthologies including Black Eye and Morose Delectation published by Rotland Press.  Stephen also teaches graphic design/illustration at the College for Creative Studies.


Criteria:   Work must have been created within the last 2 years. All media considered.


Entry Fee:  $15 for non-members.  Free for members of Whitdel Arts.  A $24 annual Whitdel Arts membership can be purchased through PayPal at: www.whitdelarts.com/n/membership/.


Submissions:   All entries must be submitted via email.  No mailed in entries, slides or CDs will be accepted.  Entries can be submitted to thebitters@whitdelarts.com.  Each artist can submit up to 3 works, with one overall jpg image for each work and one detail image for each work, if necessary.

72 dpi resolution


No more than 2 mb


Longest dimension should be at 1000 pixels (maximum)


Name each image as follows: lastname_firstname_entrynumber.jpg (example: king_jamie_01.jpg, king_jamie_02.jpg) OR lastname_firstname_entrynumber_detail.jpg


In addition, a corresponding slide list must be uploaded.  On the slide list, please include:


 


Entry number, Artist’s name, Title, Medium, Date, Dimensions, Price  (Example:  01 – Jamie King, Self-Portrait, serigraph, 2011, 18” x 24”, $200.00)


If work is not for sale, please indicate NFS.  If no price is labeled for an artwork, it will be presumed NFS.


Also, please include a brief artist’s statement, no more than 200 words.


Deadline:  Submissions of images and/or proposals must be received by no later than June 15, 2013.  


Artists will be notified of jurying results no later than June 30, 2013 via email.  


Sales:  For artwork sold during the exhibition, Whitdel Arts takes a 33% commission fee of the sales price, regardless of other gallery affiliation.  Artwork need not be for sale.  


Work Drop Off & Installation:


Accepted work must be delivered or hand-delivered to Whitdel Arts by July 20, 2013.  


Artists living in the Metro Detroit area are responsible for transporting their works to Whitdel Arts by the drop-off date.  If installation must be completed and/or accompanied by the artist, the artist is responsible for completing installation at least 2 days before the exhibition opening on August 2, 2013.


Artists living outside Metro Detroit and shipping their work to Whitdel Arts are responsible for making sure their work arrives by July 20, 2013.  Detailed instructions and/or diagrams for installation, as well as any specific hardware, material, etc. needed for installation must accompany the work.  Please include visual photographs of how the final installation is to look.


Artists having their work delivered by a third party carrier are responsible for all shipping costs and insurance.  Return shipping must be included with the work upon its arrival at Whitdel Arts.  Whitdel Arts will not ship any artwork back to the artists until return shipping is received.  Shipped artwork must come in a sturdy, reusable shipping container; please no packing peanuts or glass.  Please include instructions for installation.  


Whitdel Arts reserves the right to omit any accepted work not ready for installation or if it is not as described in the artist’s submission.  


All artists are responsible for insurance of their work while is it at Whitdel Arts between the drop off date and the day it is picked up/returned.

Work Pick-up:  Unsold, hand-delivered artwork must be picked up by the artist by August 31, 2013.  Whitdel Arts will return shipped artwork that has return postage included.  Whitdel Arts will not ship any artwork back to the artist until return postage is received.  After 30 days after the end of the exhibition, any unclaimed artwork, sold or unsold, remaining in the gallery becomes the property of Whitdel Arts.  Whitdel Arts reserves the right to dispose of any artwork remaining in the gallery after 30 days after the end of the exhibition.
