The Alone Together Film Festival is presented by SFU Public Square; a signature project of Simon Fraser University - The Engaged University. In September 2012, the SFU Public Square is holding its inaugural Community Summit, exploring the issue of isolation in the urban environment. The film festival is one of a number of events taking place over a week of programming, September 18 - 23, 2012.

The theme of ATFF relates to a critical and growing issue - a lack of social capital and feeling of belonging, neighbourliness, and human connection in our urban cities. The results of a recent community outreach initiative, conducted by the Vancouver Foundation, suggests the themes of isolation, community connectedness and belonging are taking on increased importance and significance in Metro Vancouver. As stated in A Better Connection, “The issue people said concerned them most was isolation and disconnection; the feeling that we increasingly live in silos, separated by race, language, income, age, and even geography.”

We aim to bring together SFU students, staff, alumni and faculty, as well as community residents, business and service organizations with an interest in the issues of urban isolation and disconnection. The festival will offer post-film dialogues, and opportunities to engage with filmmakers.
