In the last decade, visual artists such as Miranda July, Steve McQueen and Julian Schnabel have legitimized the crossover from visual art to filmmaking. Light Assembly is the first-ever film festival dedicated to assisting artists in that crossover between art and film. Light Assembly is also a pilot video art and architecture exposition program unique in the world.
Conceived as a beta of Time Zones Chicago, planned for premier in late Summer of 2013, the goal of Light Assembly is to combine large-scale video art projection with the citywide canvas of Miami Beach and mainland Miami’s modern architectural marvels and historic landmarks.

Light Assembly will stage its inaugural festival in Miami and Beaches this December 6-9, 2012 during Art Basel. We are currently accepting film, new media and video art submissions for jury review.
Light Assembly provides nine different categories of submission for video artists and filmmakers. These are divided into two umbrella categories: Cinema Screenings (designated by "CS" in the entry system) and Architectural Projections (designated by "AP"). Those artists selected for Architectural Projections are responsible for a minimum $750 participation fee; Locations for artists will be smaller spaces, including storefronts, hotel lobbies and more, though larger main locations will also be made available at a higher optional rate. Winners are responsible for providing their own equipment and installing the projection on-location, unless otherwise noted. Please visit our Locations Info page for more information.
All AP and CS information, including a full list of locations, a schedule of screenings, times, locations and capsule descriptions of each video will be published on the Verge, Light Assembly and Art Pages sites, and will also be included in the print edition of Art Pages.
ARCHITECTURAL PROJECTION (AP) CATEGORY (single category):
Artist Architectural Projections (AP)
The Architectural Projections (AP) category is a juried submission for artists whose works will be presented on the facade or some part of a Miami Beach or Miami area building. Locations for artists will be smaller spaces, including storefronts, hotel lobbies and more, though larger main locations will also be made available at a higher optional rate. Artists will be given the option to request projection locations in the order their applications are received.
CINEMA SCREENING (CS) CATEGORIES (includes the following eight categories):
Feature-Length Film and Video Works (CS)
The Feature-length film and video works (CS) category is a juried submission for artists whose works will be screened at Miami-area movie theaters. Feature-length films must be 50 minutes or longer in duration.
Short Film and Video Works (CS)
The Short Film and Video Works (CS) category is a juried submission for artists and filmmakers whose works will be screened at Miami-area movie theaters. Shorts must be 50 minutes or shorter in duration.
Art Documentary (CS)
The Art Documentary (CS) category is for documentary film and videos on art-related subjects. Biopics are also welcome for this category, as are subjects that skirt the line between the imagination and reality. Winning works will be screened at Miami-area movie theaters.
Art TV (CS)
The Art TV (CS) category is for film and videos works that utilize the format of the television program. Sitcoms, action series, talk show formats; if it's TV, it's good for the Art TV category. Youtube format shows are also welcome for submission, as are public access programs. Winners will be screened on a loop in a special LA section at Verge Art Fair Miami at The Greenview Hotel, in rooms converted into intimate screening areas.
Music + Video (CS)
The Music + Video (CS) category is for film and videos works that combine music and imagery. Duration of submissions in this category should be five minutes or less. Winners will be screened on a loop in a special LA section at Verge Art Fair Miami at The Greenview Hotel, in rooms converted into intimate screening areas.
Tiny Lenses (CS)
Tiny Lenses (CS) category is a juried submission for works made exclusively on cell phone cameras. Preferred duration of all entries is 10 minutes or shorter. Winners will be screened on a loop in a special LA section at Verge Art Fair Miami at The Greenview Hotel, in rooms converted into intimate screening areas.
Art Porn (CS)
The Art Porn (CS) category is for both the hard core and soft core; visual culture porn, curator porn; fleshy or over-the-top intellectually specialized. Whatever your submission, it must conform to the definition of pornography as graphic depiction. Winners will be screened on a loop in a special LA section at Verge Art Fair Miami at The Greenview Hotel, in rooms converted into intimate screening areas.
Livecast (CS)
The Livecast (CS) category is for film and videos works that are broadcast live over the internet. New technologies such as Skype, Bambuser and others have created a niche in the film and video worlds where live broadcast can be done by anyone. Given the nature of this category, entrants are asked to submit a written proposal and speculative video sample of what they intend the final livecast to look like. Our only steadfast criteria for this category is that accepted proposals be broadcast live during the dates of the event. Winners will be embedded in special screening pages on the Verge Art Fair Miami / Light Assembly website.
