Manitoulin Island is located in mid-Northern Ontario, Canada, about 6 hours north of Toronto. Though sparsely populated, Manitoulin is rich is arts, culture and community focus. Hundreds of swimmable, freshwater lakes dot the island, rare geological formations such as alvars hide in the west end, and stunning vistas from clifftops are just a hike away. Wild orchids and gourmet wild mushrooms appear seasonally as do migrating birds and hibernating animals.
Sustainability and resilience are at the forefront here with a locally operated and taught Permaculture school, in-school gardening programs for kids, and many farmers markets where seasonal produce is always at it's best.
