GLOBALIZATION – CONNECTIONS – TIME „A dozen Worlds or the Day has 48 hours...“

6 Continents – 12 Artists – 1 Day, the day February 29th 2012

Shortcut history of the project

On February 29th 2008 (leap year), 12 artists from 6 continents were invited to create an “OneDayWork” in the limited time of 24 hours on the spot of their country and city. The idea of the project was considered an experiment. The artists weren’t restricted in size and material. Before starting their work they had to read the most read local newspaper and include the date of it somewhere on the work to keep the authenticity.

The subject 2008 was “localGLOBAL – the gained and lost day February 29th”.

Artists 2008

Doc Ross (NZ), Sarah Robson (AU), Rathin Kanji (IN), Talal Moualla (UAE), Stefan Balog (RO), Yasemin Yilmaz (GER), Cecile Heystek (NAM), Mountassir Chemao (MO), Perla Bajder (AR), Raquel Schwartz (BO), Paul Campbell (USA), Patricia Goodrich (USA)

The 12 works of that day were collected under the patronage of UNESCO and went on a global exhibition tour to most of the countries of the artists.

On the next leap day the final exhibition will take place in Hannover Germany (Kunsthalle) exactly four years after the creation day – on February 29th 2012.

The idea for February 29th 2012

Subject: „Snowball“

„Snowball“ can be associated with winter, childhood, climate, climate change, speed, movement, colour, form,...

The idea is to build a tradition and to chose and invite again 12 new artists from 6 continents, 2 from each, and to create a new total joint work consisting again of 12 art works created in different parts of the world on the same day.

Additionally, it is planned to include the new artists as part of the final exhibition of the former project in the Kunsthalle via Skype. While a time period finishes in Hannover another time period starts in the world. This will enable us to involve you as an artist to the current exhibition and build a connection to the visitors of the exhibition in this event as contemporary witnesses.

Regarding to the subject “Snowball” I would like to initiate a “Snowball-system”. Therefore I kindly ask each of the invited 12 artists to also invite artists of their choice and number, who in their turn are asked to invite further artists to simultaneously create an OneDayWork in the size of a postcard on that day and mail immediately to Kunsthalle on March 1st.

YOU are one of the 12 top invited artists and the additional artists invited by you and their artist colleagues, … are part of it in form of a smart mob* to visualize your outgoing global connections and networking.

This way we will have 12 artists and their works and xxx postcard works - a snowball-system.

Your artwork, where you are not restricted in size and material, will be communicated to the media and collected later for the global exhibition series, which will be planned and will be exhibited during the next four years.

The postcard mail-arts will be part of the current exhibition until March 18th 2012 and on February 29th 2016 at the final exhibition of this period.

It is highly experimental. We do not know in advance what will happen and whether anything “big” will happen, but I think it is worth a try. In 2008 we did not know if any of the 12 artists would work on that day at all and… they all did.

The criteria for you will be

- To spend one day of your life for this non-profit project!
- To buy the local newspaper before creating your “OneDayWork” on February 29th 2012.
- Not to work longer than until your local midnight.
- To be connected to Hannover/Germany Kunsthalle via Skype on the creation day.

- YOU are not restricted in size and material of your work! (But still please consider the transportations later) Thank you.

- To communicate as soon as you are selected, at the latest before February 29th 2012, to your artist colleagues of choice to create a postcard and to ask them to also involve other artists etc, … for a “snowball” smart mob.
- On the back of the postcard they should note the
- title of their work
- date of February 29th 2012
- their own name, city, country
- the name of the artist who has invited him/her

* A smart mob is a group that, contrary to the usual connotations of a mob, behaves intelligently or efficiently because of its exponentially increasing network links. This network enables people to connect to information and others, allowing a form of social coordination.
