A creative weekend Masterclass which embraces an inspiring holistic approach to the subject matter and employs tools and materials personally sourced and selected by Campbell Sandilands on his recent travels. Campbell spent 7 years studying various artforms in Japan, completing his MFA at Tama Art University in Tokyo, before going on to pursue 4 years of training in brush calligraphy with a Master in Kyoto. He notes “I found the process of Japanese calligraphy very liberating, allowing me to focus on a more meditative, intuitive approach to my own work”. Oriental Markmaking participants will gain a historical insight into Sho, Japanese brush calligraphy, as well as some of Campbell’s personal experiences with his Master.

This will be followed by teachings of a meditative sumi ink grinding process which helps to focus the mind. Using this meditative approach, they will be guided by their intuition in making large-scale brush marks on paper. Participants will have the opportunity to sample various styles of brush calligraphy. Oriental calligraphy brushes will be used in conjunction with other brushes, some hand-made, in order to create various exciting marks, which could, if wished, be honed into a more formal abstract composition.
