IN 2011: 10 NEW ARTISTS EVERY MONTH WILL MAKE WORK IN RESPONSE TO THE NEWSPAPER EVERY DAY.

Introducing,

a blog with the ultimate goal to remix the newspaper, to engage and create dialogue within all media of art regarding the news, literacy, and the experience of reading the paper. Over the course of 2011, 120 artists will use the newspaper as fodder to illustrate, sew, draw, paint, sculpt, photograph…

365 Days of Print evolved from my interest in the changing landscape of news and media. I joined twitter, around the same time I started the project (in November 2009) as a personal challenge. I began to explore social media and understand the appeal of bite sized news via tweets. But as a visual person, despite the humor, wit and immediacy that twitter provides, I realized that nothing could replace the experience of sitting on the subway, soiling your hands and reading an entire article.

10 artists are selected every month and asked to create something every day in response to the newspaper as object and inspiration. I encourage the artists to post daily, since we are gaining a following and it establishes a rhythm...regardless of whether it's an original artwork, comment, interesting article, being engaged is the most important detail. A lot of the artists have been using the NY Times as their paper of choice, however it is up to the artist. I raised enough money to give each artist $25-$30 to buy the paper if they choose. Artists are encouraged to sell their works made throughout the month, though I hope they will keep the originals for exhibitions in 2012, artist receive 100% of all sales profits.

I am promoting the project and interest/traffic is increasing daily. We have one exhibition lined up in the fall and I am submitting several proposals for 2012. We aim to publish a book as well in time.
