Hrísey, the island, is by the north coast of Iceland, short from the arctic circle. The island is surrounded with a breathtaking view of the mountains on the coast of Eyjafjordur and the atmosphere will put you back in time of peace and wonderful nature. Perfect inspiration for artists.
The old schoolhouse has been decorated (facilitated) with three bedrooms and working area so individuals or groups can work their art.
The Old Schoolhouse is centered in the small village on the south coast of the island, with a good view over the area, ca. 10 min. walk from the harbour. Population is about 200 persons.
The island is 7,0 km2 and 7,5 km long. The only way to get to the island is by the ferry Sævar from Árskógssandur. It’s scheduled every hour in the summertime (different winter schedule) and takes ca. 20 min. There is a bus from Akureyri to the harbour of Árskógssandur (ca. 30 min. drive).
Service in the village of Hrísey: restaurant, shop, post office, bank and swimming pool.
Easy access to beautiful nature, bird watching and walking trails around the island.

As of 2011 there is ongoing all year “Open call” for applications for Old school artist residency and we welcome last minute applications.
