FICTIVE DAYS is a two-week performance studio for the collective research of fictional characters.
Taking place during the NEW LIFE BERLIN Festival in June 2008, eight artists/researchers has be selected from WOOLOO.ORG applicants to live and work closely together in a large Berlin apartment at Greifswalder Str. 220
10405 Berlin / Prenzlauer Berg. The back house, 3rd floor.
/Tram M4
(the apartment is open to visitors everyday from 7 PM)
The 8 selected characters that lived Performed and documented was:
Amelia Geocos as Regan McNeil - from the film The Exorcist, 1973 by William Friedkin
Nikki Johnson as Diane Arbus - from the film Fur, 2006 by Steven Shainberg
Prescott Trudeau as Alexis Zorbas- from the film Zorba The Greek, 1964 by Nikos Kazantzakis
Rebecca Loyche as Elisabet Vogler and Alma - from the film Persona, 1966 by Ingmar Bergman
Shokufeh Kavani as Queen Elizabeth - from the film Elizabeth, 1998 by Shekhar Kapur
Tomomi Shimizu as Taeko Nasu - from the film The Idiot, 1951 by Akira Kurosawa
Ve Magni as Princess Aura - from the film Flash Gordon, 1980 by Mike Hodges
Sergio Zevallos as Fiona - from the film Fiona, 1998 by - Amos Kollek
During the course of FICTIVE DAYS (June 1-15), everyday functions in the Greifswalder Strasse apartment are arranged solely on the structures of famous film scenes involving the performing characters. Consequently, everything that happens during the two weeks can be understood as a scene. All scenes will be realized by collaboration of the group and then further developed following the individual intentions, emotional reactions and practical needs of each participant.
As with any other private apartment, it is entirely up to the participants to decide when they want to allow visitors and guests into the space during the two weeks. Participants can come and leave, as they want.
Video equipment is available to use in the apartment and the participants can document any scene(s) they want. After the performance-residency, all participants will get a copy of all recorded material and will be free to create they own version of a final film - should they wish to do so.
FICTIVE DAYS is a project developed by Peruvian artists Sergio Zevallos in collaboration with TEMPS – space support for nomadic projects. The project arises from the premise that the conscious aspects of affective relations happen between imagined identities and that the human ability to create fiction* is one of its defining characteristics. Through its live cultivation of personal relationships, FICTIVE DAYS aims to investigate both the clichés of cinema and those of our everyday lives.
*"Fiction" is here defined as an imaginative form of narrative, behavior or communication that is not entirely based upon the concept of facts.

It will be interesting to see the individual characters blend and clash with the other characters. I'm thinking of what I would like to act out as... frank from blue velvet or someone like the the stalker from Tarkovsky's The Stalker, I don't know, something along those lines.

thanks Gitta. Yes we should probably organize a kind of gala-party. It is though that everyone kann select and edit the materials creating his own film. This way we could have very interesting variations and perspectives of what we did. If we have enough edited films, for sure I will organize some kind of festival.

an anonym question about the project
I'm an actress/performing artist and I have a question concerning Fictive days: I've been wondering about what you qualify as a mainstrem movie: one made in recent years or do also old movies count? I'm very interested to apply to Fictive Days, but my personal main interest lies in movies made between 30's and 70's (I had in my mind the Cabaret musical from the 70's from which Liza Minelli won her oscar for best actress.) But I also have an alternative character idea from a very mainstream musical made in this decade. So I will be able to choose my character if the oldies don't count as well.
Best of luck for your Fictive Days project!
...and my answer:
Hi, thanks for your request, and good news: Anything goes!
You can be who ever you want, who has ones been proyected in a screen: from Dunald Duck til Natalie Portman.
You can be some unknown actor-actress from a silent film or an underpart from an old Mexican film.
The formulation mainstrem movie is not precise I know. We, the curators, mean a film that somewhen has been presented to an open audience or a bride publicum. However, I am interested in comitted participants and a strong mix of characters.
Greetings from Berlin

more anonym questions:
Hi, and sorry for such late reply from my side... in case you have time for answers, is it better to choose a character who is more my look-alike? (since you ask for pics of both the character and partcipant) or does it play any role in choosing the participants for Fictive Days? (I am asking so many question of course because I really want to participate and choose the best character for application and for the project -if chosen:))
...more answers:
Hi, a similar appearance with the character you choice doesn't play any rol by the selection of the participants. We are asking for picts because it is a casting.
More interesting are the ideas of why you want to participate and how you want to be during your residence. It could be a stronger statement if you apply for being someone very different than you are in real life. You may also be a male character while you are a women.
And if your need to participate is because you think you look very alike some film character, this is also a concept and a statement, and it is valid.

Sergio

the above comments have somewhat answered my questions but for clarificaton: we re talking about a movie 'character' (a specific role), not a movie star or famous actor-is that correct -So one could propose to be "Stanley' in 'A Styreetcar Named Desire" but not Marlon Brando-is that correct?-david Rohn

Yes Rohn,
you have to apply as a specific role and not as a movie star.
You may apply as "Stanley' because it is the rol in 'A Styreetcar Named Desire". Not as Marlon Brando who was the person who carried this rol in that film.
Thanks for your question and welcome to apply!

Hi Marijana, thanks for your interest to participate in Fictive Days. About your question, we do not have founding for this project. We, the curators and assistants are working as volunteer. Therefore we cannot pay your travel expenses. For the project we will have a big apartment with the basic things. This will be our "film studio". And every participant is welcome to live and work there for free during the 2 weeks.

Hey Sergio,
Two questions regarding this project:
1. In the application info it is mentioned that both a personal photo, and a picture of a character one is to play, need to be attached. Following the application process, I have never found a place to attach the pictures. Where do I include the pics in my application form?
2. I have already applied for the project, and I wonder if I can reapply once I find out the info about my above question.
Thanks and all the best,
Dusanka

Hi Dusanka, I just read your questions and I am answering through my personal mail, to be fast...
1) Since you have to apply through your account by Wooloo, you have at first to upload in your account, any picture you would like to include in the application. Then you will find them by step 2 of the application's procedure.
2) This is something I don't know. Try to open your application file in your wooloo account. Or try to aplly again from the same account and see what happens. Last, you may create just for this singel case a new account and apply from ther.
If all this is to complicated, please don't cry or commit suicide. I saw your application and I think we have there enough information about you. But try it, it would be nice to see the fictive character. Thanks a lot and good luck.... you still have some hours.
Saludos,
Sergio

it's unfortunate we couldnt come for this project even if we were selected. bureaucracy is mainly what's stopping us. we'll just act out our characters here in manila and wherever. anyway, it's an open and endless project. we always live in in our dream roles, we try to survive everyday mundane mediocrity. we make our lives more interesting than they actually are. i wish the participants there good luck and the bestest regards!!!!! :)
