Exhibition

Nylon Riots
Nylon Riots, Caroline Mak\\\'s first show with wooloo.org at New Life Shop is a multi-faceted, interactive exhibition requiring the participation of a global network of people, as well as the physical presence and labor of willing participants in the gallery. In collaboration with Kevin Chan, the artists will create a condensed version of the contemporary garment industry and economy. Through an open call for submissions, visitors to the website www.nylonriots.com will become T-shirt designers, submitting their designs that will be posted and displayed in the exhibition. Equally important is the participation of the visitors to the gallery. Visitors will have to simultaneously play the role of laborer/ buyer and tourist. They will be responsible for choosing a design, and will have to manufacture the T-shirt themselves using the blank t-shirts and piles of various textiles and second hand clothes that have been used to transform the gallery space into an open market place as well as a virtual sweatshop that is monitored by webcams. Workstations with basic tools will be set up for the visitors to complete their garments. After completion of the T-shirt(s), and as compensation for their labor, the laborers may then keep the T-shirt as a souvenir of their time in the gallery. The exhibition will open November 27th and will continue through early January 2008.
