degree show 2012
This project conducted for my degree show aimed to turn negative stereotypes of women upside down using Rodin's sculpture The Thinker (1880). More than anyother subject the female nude has created art; it is an icon of Western culture and a symbol of womens oppression in society. Paintings and sculptures of modernism portray the same range of images that remind us that women are no-where in culture. In oppersition the image of man is fantasized as pure form; it is his body that defines the concept of self in humanism. Recreating Rodins The Thinker (1880) will thus deconstruct the terms of binary difference and secure the female body as the absent terms into culture. Artists that have influened this project include: Barbara Kruger (1983), Hannah Wilkes (1975), Cindy Sherman (1977), Tracey Rose (2001), Renee Cox (1960-), Jenny Savile (1992- 2006) and The Thinker by Auguste Rodin (1840-1917).
