The Travellers Box
I have taken part in the travellers box project, which has the theme of 'to travel is to go somewhere as yourself and become something else. I decided to turn the travellers box into a projector using two magnIfying glasses and an old lens. I thought that a slide show was appropriate for this project as the guidlines suggested the work should involve performance. I created drawings based on the Inuit folk tale 'Nakasungnak'. The story is about a man called Nakasungnak who travels far up north to live with new people. He was told of the ice covered bear which was impossible to kill. Nakasungnak decided to encounter the bear, on finding it he ran up to it, only armed with a small knife. Nakasungnak instantly disappeared down the bears open mouth. The bear tottered and soon fell down dead. When Nakasungnak's fellow men approached the bear they discovered a knife sticking out between his ribs. When the hole was widened Nakasungnak jumped out of it. The hair and the skin on his face had come off, shivering with cold and ague. he ran away to the house. In the mean time the bears flesh provided food for most of the winter. Afterwards the people of the north told Nakasungnak how to behave, when they were trying to catch birds that could speak and fish with both eyes on one side. The swarms of birds and fish arrived: but Naksungnak did not heed the advice and consequently caught none. Lastly they warned him of the giant gnats that were soon expected, the size of sea-fowls, and with stings like the point of an arrow. The swarms approched, like a broken cloud from the south, the people retreated to their tents. However, Nakasungnak disregarded their warnings and remained outside. When all was over, and they went out to look for Nakasungnak, they discovered only a skeleton lying beneath the boat.
