First Walk
In southern NSW, Australia there is a property called Arcadia owned by farmer, Graham Strong. Strong has collaborated with Stephen Harradine to create a geoglyph of gigantic proportions on his property. On the weekend of the 1 August 2010 an art and ecological festival 'Meridian Conversations' was held discussing meridian lines and how the geoglyph is centered upon a line that faces true north. Invited onto the property to run a workshop about mapping resulted in a collaboration with Melbourne photographer Daniel O'Brien. The project which we will commence is to map Arcadia over the next year and create tudor costuming relating to the historic past of mapping origins and how this has directly affected Arcadia. Including the placement of roads and telephone lines. The first part of this process was to map the geoglyph which was done with workshop participants: Their drawings mapping the way they moved and walked along the geoglyph can be seen below: For more information on the project please see:http://emmarochesterdrawing.blogspot.com/2010/07/tracing-more-than-north-point.htmlAnd for the Meridian Conversation Festival please go to:http://lost.net.au/ecoactive/2010/06/16/meridian-conversations
