Detritical SFPS 2009

Exhibition

By:Mark Brown
DETRITICAL SFPS was an installation exhibited in the sound installation exhibition entitled Come Hither Noise at Fremantle Art Centre in September 2009. This project involved the ‘activation’ of a ‘found’ artifact by finding its resonant audio frequency. Using two small audio resonators installed under each of the South Fremantle Power Station Foamlite dioxide extinguisher cylinders & tone generation software I found the resonant frequency of the cylinders. The result was the induction of a low volume acoustic resonant ringing that will emanate from the cylinders. Videographic footage was play on an LCD screen installed flat on the low plinth that the Extinguisher sat on. The footage was of a slow panning top down sequence of stagnant water pooled in reservoirs in the derelict South Fremantle Power Station. An audio speaker cone sat face up on the plinth. Fragments of graffiti paint scraped from the rusting steel girders at the now abandoned South Fremantle Power Station site were placed in the upturned cone of the 10” audio speaker. The sound of a voice recording made of the operating instructions printed on the fire extinguisher was played through the upturned audio speaker. The sound was abstracted, buried under the fragments of detritus.
