During the NEW LIFE BERLIN festival in June 2008, Ali&Cia invites artists and other participants to contribute to a more open society through the collective cooking, building and subsequent consumption of a wall made of food.
Long after the fall of that other Wall, EAT THE WALL, a collective, anonymous project, invites critical reflection on the more subtle barriers still constructed around the world, socially and individually, implicitly and internally, that shut us off from those with whom we share our environment.
EAT THE WALL aims to bring together Berliners from all walks of life that perhaps rarely have occasion to meet, community groups and activists from various backgrounds and neighborhoods, to address issues of social exclusion and dialogue in culinary contributions that we will then use to build a wall. Just as other walls have been transformed into canvases for colourful artistic expression and intervention, filled with messages of despair and of hope, our wall will be a depository of all our wishes for dialogue and understanding, to be shared and chewed over.
Once the wall is complete, together we will eat our way through the divide in a grand communal catharsis. From barrier to banquet, we’ll celebrate the way in which cooking, sharing food and eating together breaks down barriers, bridges difference, and forges relationships. Beyond simply representing the integration of the city’s different social groups, EAT THE WALL will enact this integration and claim the city for all of its citizens.
EAT THE WALL is a project conceived and developed by Ali&Cia. Ali&Cia has produced an extensive range of food related art projects around the world, including sensory concerts and phagy rituals where reality is reinterpreted through food and devoured collectively.
Construction:
Our wall (4.5m long and 2m high) will employ a base structure of plastic crates on their sides and other containers all stacked up.
Participation:
Cook your own edible brick at home and bring it along on Sunday at 5pm for it to be put into the crates or stacked on top. You can use all types of containers but the more visible the food the better. One solution is an egg carton filled with your edible message in morsel code. All your bricks will be used to build the wall and then be eaten by everyone who comes.
Communication:
All around the world, walls of shame have been transformed into canvases for colourful artistic expression and intervention, filled with messages of despair and of hope. Our wall will be a depository of all our wishes for dialogue and understanding, to be shared and chewed over. Think about how you’re going to communicate to the person that eats your edible message and use all your imagination to express yourself. You can decorate your edible brick or its container and even include messages and mementos if you like.
Workshop:
All aspiring cooking constructors are invited to our workshop for more ideas on how to participate.
