PROJECTS
2006
Você tem medo do que? (What are you afraid of?)
Photography exhibition and video-installation - São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro - Brazil
Claudia Jaguaribe created a site for web users to answer the question “What are you afraid of?” in an Internet cooperation project with the leading Brazilian web portal UOL. On the base of the thousands of replies received, the writer Beatriz Bracher created a collage of various texts, that illuminates the subject of fear in its countless contours. The website (www.vocetemmedodoque.com.br) was redone with all the answers and videos so that all the participants could see the result of the work. Claudia then created a video installation using some of the replies as her inspiration. It is presented in four screens arranged in an L format; here voices of the testimonials interact with images, leading the spectator into a strong immersion of fear within the focal point of today’s large metropolitan cities. “O Banho” is also part of this work. A picture inside a big acrylic box shows a naked woman, like a prisoner, creating a reflection about death.
2004
Tudo é Sofia
Photography exhibition and video-installation - Baró Cruz Gallery, São Paulo - Brazil
This work is a reflection on the concept of beauty in today’s world. Using overlappings and manipulations that do not allow for the distinction between real and false, “Tudo é Sofia” shows us the imaginary beauty of flawless perfection. The Video Installation “Tudo é Sofia” is an homage to Iemanjá. On January 1st of each year flowers are thrown into the ocean to celebrate the perpetual return of giving and receiving in honour of the female goddess lemanja in Brazil. This festivity is being used as the source of an infinte unfolding of interwoven images of beauty.
2004
Ma Femme
Photography exhibition - Baró Cruz Gallery, São Paulo - Brazil
Continuing with the approach used in “Série Azul” and “Amores Brutos”, “Ma femme” is a minimalist work that plays with the illusions of the feminine forms and design objects alluding to feminity; all offering an ambiguous view about women.
2003
Fantasia
Video-installation -
Using a series of carnival pictures, Claudia Jaguaribe created a ballet of images of strongly expressive and celebratory beauty.
2003
Caraminholas
Video-installation -
This video is a reflection on the distinction between the “ me” and nature, the real and the imaginary. In it, human hair and nature melt into landscapes of chaos and disorder. The different image layers show the allusion to something that is alive, something not clearly tangible, as in thought.
2003
Carandiru
Video-installation -
An animation of pictures taken in the Carandiru penitentiary, during the filming of the the movie with the same title, directed by Hector Babenco, creating a poetic and tragic view upon the situation of prisoners.
2002
Amores Brutos
Photography exhibition - Vermelho Gallery, São Paulo - Brazil
A daily object is transformed into an image that transmits sensuality and evokes feminine and masculine organs; pictures that express the three-dimensionality of a sculpture. Here new artistic meaning is given to a design object.
2002
Série Azul
Photography installation - Vermelho Gallery, São Paulo - Brazil
The “Série Azul” started Claudia´s first series of minimalist photos. Here objects are taken out of their real context creating new kind of objects and meaning; virtual ones, leading to images of stars and planets. Another characteristic is their three-dimensionality, creating sculpture-like images.
2002
Aeroporto
Book, photography exhibition and video-installation - Thomie Othake Institut - São Paulo, Brazil
A reflection on transition using an airport as the manifestation of globalization in the 21st century. Documentary like images for example portraits of stewardesses and very big scale illusive images serve as illustrations of impermanence typical of airports. The video-installation “Aeroporto” consists of three screens that show one turbine and the constant movement of luggage converyorbelts. The apparent simplicity of the work forms a contrast to the high technology background of airports.
2000
O Corpo da Cidade
Book and photography exhibition -
An photographic essay about the backstage happenings during the carnival in Rio de Janeiro; one of the most covered themes in photography; “Taking photographs in a orginal way of these events represents a large challenge. Claudia Jaguaribe escapes in a brilliant way from this trap using personal language, mixing reality and fantasy, intuition and technology”. Lauro Cavalcanti. O Corpo da Cidade, São Paulo, Bei, 2000.
1996
Retratos Anônimos
Photography exhibition -
Made from interwoven collages, “Retratos Anônimos” combines images of many people and in so doing creates virtual portraits, that do not correspond to an existing person. Each image is build from layers of other images, foreshawdoing Claudia`s future works. The portraits are very contemporary, representing ambiguous personages, without definition of sex, age and time. The plasticity and the contrast of the images transmit the dramatic nature typical of 17th century`s baroque paintings.
1995
Quem você pensa que ela é?
Photonovel and photography exposition -
An inovative work for its time, it uses digital technology and hybrid languages of photography, design and the written word to build a parody of a forgotten popular genre. The photo-novel was conceived by the artist similar to a photographed movie, with strong graphic intervention. It has been viewed as an excellent example of brazillian post-modern photography, where what matters is the desconstruction of the genre.
1993
Cidades
Book and photography exhibition -
This is Claudia´s first artistic work, in which she develops the basic facets of her photographic style. Big contrasts, powerful use of color and low speed create tracks on her images, a tension between the visible and the invisible. Subjectivity and the transitority nature of everything are being established as the major hallmarks of her work.
