The American Flag
I’ve always built my pictures. I don’t think I’ve ever taken one. For me a photograph is more about the push and pull than the dodge and burn. This work is about layers as I am about layers. Digital technology facilitates this method of working for me. My American Flag series are multi-layered gum dichromate prints printed on a full sheet of watercolor paper from large format digital negatives. The source images were taken in the Dominican Republic, my home country, and in New York, my home.

Immigrants are citizens of the world. In this sense, our land is everywhere and nowhere. We strive to figure out our heritage, and although we could point out our direct lineage, what shapes us is much more complex than that. I believe that our quest to link back to our past, however small, offers us a hand on our family tree.
