BaseNorth is an artist collective consisting of Anna Puhakka, Nicola Smith and Sarah Stamp. As a group we represent a diverse cultural and geographical mix, Nicola Smith is originally from London, Sarah Stamp from the North East, and Anna Puhakka from Finland. Our diverse backgrounds, range of skills and experiences make us a dynamic and dedicated team committed to realising projects at a local, national and international level. BaseNorth is committed to making conceptual work in any medium, which best represents, the idea. We do not limit ourselves to working in the white cube, and work in response to the context of our surroundings. Therefore we feel a research and development trip is best suited to furthering our practice. From our experience we have learned that primary research and spending time in the place of interest is crucial to making context engaged work. |

Rednile Projects, Sunniside, Sunderland |

During our 3 month residency at Rednile studios we supported/assisted Rednile with all aspects of their 2007 summer exhibition program. BaseNorth were due to have an exhibition at the end of our residency due to unforeseen circumstances the building was sold and will be demolished. This led to BaseNorth working in a more collaborative way around the idea of regeneration as we no longer had a studio space.

Sunniside Gardens, Norfolk Street, Sunderland
BaseNorth have been making work in response to the regeneration in the local area since July 07. Sexing up the whiteboard is a culmination of thoughts about the changes happening not only in Sunderland but all over the country. The film was projected onto a shop window and viewed from the street.

Berlin 10 day research trip |
Arts council funded - Berlin, June 01 - June 10, 2008 |
The process of making the collaborative video 'Sexing up the whiteboard' provided us with a platform to explore the idea of regeneration on a local level and inspired us to explore this as an international activity. We propose to go to Berlin in order to conduct research and make contacts in the Berlin art scene. Our research and development trip to Berlin is divided in to two key components. These are to network, make contacts with arts professional in Berlin and to conduct research on our personal areas of interest in the city. This will be used to inspire new work that will then be presented to our peers back in the North East.
