About

Eric Van Hove was born (1975) in Algeria the same year Bas Jan Ader was lost at sea, exactly five days after Pasolini's death on a beach of Ostia, and spent most of his youth in Yaoundé (Cameroon). A Doctor of Arts from the Tōkyō University of the Arts (D.A., Tōkyō, 2008), he was educated in Belgium and Japan, studying Contemporary art (B.A., Ecole de Recherche Graphique [ERG], Brussels, 2000) and Traditional Japanese Calligraphy (M.A., Gakugei University, Tōkyō, 2004). From a family of Belgian engineers and architects, Van Hove's current work, both heterogeneous and eclectic, often questions the limits and "moral competence" of Contemporary Art as a western institution once brought outside of the art context, to what he sometimes call the "audiences of the border." At times insubstantial and subversive, his interventions often question sociological, political and ecological issues, and have been deemed as "conceptual poetry", relating to the Fantastic Art movement. Migrant by choice, he is based between Europe, Africa and Japan.
