About

B. 1978, Copenhagen Denmark.

Copenhagen based artists Hannah Heilmann practices solo and in collaboration. She is a member of former art collective ‘Ingen Frygt’ (2001-2010), collective of art collectives ‘Party and Lost’ (since 2009), and the artist run exhibition space Toves Galleri (since 2010). Heilmann also has a cand.mag in art history from University of Copenhagen, and work as a freelance curator and writer.

Heilmann’s work takes place as video, installation, computer collage, staged photography and explorations of poetic language, using a broad array of materials, from the sturdy to the fleeting, and often contains performative elements. Combining notions of history-as-sensibility, society’s longings, and personal nonsense within shifting hierarchies, it fuses seemingly mundane situations of everyday experience with the phantasmagoric: Everything is mystical and therefore nothing is. As such, Heilmann’s project has to do with a conception of the self as open and outside of the body, something in between culture and beyond it, nothingness and biological blob, like the space between the brain and the computer screen; your presence being right there.

Lately Heilmann have been investigating a certain condition of humdrum, splintered tunnel visions, mail ticks and interpassivity in the relation between work, people, and their computers. But instead of the interfaces of the computer, she lingers at the picture of the body-sitting-at-the-computer - a somewhat awkward motif, since there is an obvious lack of connection between the physical and virtually spaces being experienced by onlooker and performer. In a stubborn process of doing not much, Heilmann somehow stupidly tries to materialize the gaze, the soul and physical presence, not really distinguishing between the three.
