About
Corrine Edwards trained as a Textile designer, Winchester School of Art. The Royal College of Art, M.A. Printed Textiles.
My innovative Ceramic work includes: abstract sculptural forms and figures, large flat bowls, wall pieces, masks and jewellery.
Techniques.
I use a speckled stoneware clay. And a distinctive dry sky-blue glaze.
Hand built work: slab rolling, cutting out shapes, folded into abstract figurative or animal forms. Embossed and Impressed textures from incised plaster bats.
Plaster casts of clogs, human faces, double (twin) fruits, plantains. bananas, and eggs.
Decorated using innovative and experimental methods of creating incised surfaces, incorporating organic matter/metals. Drawing and cutting into the clay and painting with slips (coloured liquid clay) and oxides. The glaze is often double and triple dipped.
My ceramics and artwork are inspired by many sources and experiences.
Symbols and iconic imagery from Ancient civilizations, particularly Ghanaian Adinkra Symbols (textile stamps). ‘Pagan’ earthworks, archeological finds and artefacts.
In depth research and field work has become intrinsic to my art work, as are the videos I make of my ceramics. I recently travelled back to Ghana, visiting the Textile printers, Coffin shops, and Arts and Craft Centres.
I have made a series of short films of my visit and a solo ceramic show.
