Bobbing for Apples
This collaborative project was commissioned by Sveriges Radio (Swedish Public Radio) for the Art’s Birthday Party exhibit at Konstfack in Stockholm, Sweden. Bobbing for Apples was broadcast on Sveriges Radio (Stockholm), Radio Russia (Moscow), ORF (Vienna), RNE (Madrid), Radio Berlin-Brandenburg (Berlin), SWR (Baden-Baden), Radio France (Paris), DeutschlandRadio (Berlin), and 747 AM (Holland). Bobbing for Apples is a sound-installation and ‘party game.’ The inside of a large metal basin is outfitted with speakers, and then filled with water and apples for apple bobbing. As participants dunk their heads to bite the apples, they hear laughter under the water. Presented in a gallery sound art exhibition, we wanted to comment the act of listening, as well as the humorous or awkward conditions sometimes required by interactive art. The gallery audience had to make decisions about how and why they should listen. They were required to at least partially submerge their heads in order to hear the sounds underwater. In Sweden, the game of bobbing for apples has two identities: a party game enjoyed by children and a humiliation game endured by adults in which case bobbing for apples is followed by bobbing for sugar cubes in mounds of flour. Radio listeners heard a mysterious space, where pre-recorded laughter was joined with sounds of splashing water, apples banging a metal basin, and the screams, squeals, and laughter of on-site participants.
